CSIRO’s Space Optics Lab is devoted to the design, development, assembly and testing of optical systems for satellites, aircraft and other mobile platforms. The facility provides fabrication of precision, custom optical elements, optical systems, and testing for spatial, spectral, radiometric parameters of imaging systems. In addition, quantum mechanical light sources have been developed to communicate across free space with quantum-secured communications for position, navigation and timing. Come to visit CSIRO’s Space Optics Lab in our new, expanded facility at the CSIRO building.

We often hear that people work in the space industry to provide benefits for people here on Earth, but what does that actually look like? At this event, the Adelaide Section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics has invited a number of local space experts to discuss their work and how it benefits our presence on Earth.

The discussion shall start at 6pm on the 14th of July in Lecture Theatre LG28, Lower Napier Building, at the University of Adelaide’s North Terrace Campus, and include presentations from industry and academia. After these presentations, questions from the audience are welcomed, and if people are interested in continuing the discussion, they are welcome to join us for dinner afterwards.

Our speakers are Dr Jason Held from Saber Astronautics; Dr Volker Hessel from the ARC Centre of Excellence Plants for Space, Dr Anna Ma-Wyatt from the Andy Thomas Centre for Space Resources at the University of Adelaide; and Mr Oscar Mortier-Spole from Southern Launch. Their expertise spans launch, orbital operations, life-support, human and social factors, and work focussing on orbital manufacturing that can enhance terrestrial industry while reducing its impacts.

Towards a National Space CPD Framework: Feasibility & Industry Input

Join a national co-design workshop focused on building skills pathways and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) opportunities to support the sector’s growth through 2030 and beyond. Delivered by iLAuNCH and the Optus Industry Fellow at the Space Industry Association of Australia (SIAA), this session will explore the feasibility of a national CPD framework that recognises, grows, and connects talent from emerging professionals to industry leaders.

Workshop objectives:

• Validate the need for a national CPD framework; and

• Gather practical feedback from government, education, primes, SMEs, and early-career professionals to inform pilot programs.

The session will feature an opening address from Australian astronaut Katherine Bennell-Pegg who will share her insights on the benefits of microgravity for health and medical research and its real-world applications.  Katherine will highlight the potential for Australia to conduct microgravity research, including how its researchers and industries can best pursue this opportunity and help improve life on Earth.

MTP Connect SA Industry Development Officer, Dr Santhni Subramaniam will then lead a fireside chat  with experts working at the intersection of space and human health innovations.

Austronaut: Plants in Human Spaceflight

During this all-new half-day workshop supported by ARC Centre of Excellence in Plants for Space, participants will explore the effects of the space environment on plant physiology whilst conducting practical lab experiments with transferrable skills to microgravity research.

Good nutrition is vital for astronaut health on a mission and research groups such as Plants for Space are investigating how to grow healthier and more nutritious plants to support deep space missions. In addition to making more satisfying and nutritious meals which boost astronaut health and morale, plant growth in space can also provide an outlet for recreation and relaxation.

Key topics include understanding why duckweed is a useful crop for space plant research, investigating protein rich foods and plants, learning about controlled environment agriculture and practicing lab skills that are useful for science in human spaceflight.

Based on the successful 2-day workshop held in December 2024 at Swinburne University, the Austronaut Human Performance for Space Workshop will cover a range of topics related to astronaut candidate preparation, inspired by the interdisciplinary requirements placed on astronauts during selection and on missions.

The content of this workshop is inspired by astronauts as high performers who are physically, psychologically and technically prepared for operating in a challenging and isolated environment. Throughout this workshop, instructors will teach participants about what astronauts do to prepare and perform for spaceflight as well as about the elements that support on-going success, through the lens of becoming an astronaut.

Flight training, particularly in fast jets, has been a cornerstone of astronaut preparation since the beginning of human spaceflight. Early astronauts were fighter pilots, and jet training remains essential for building critical skills by exposing astronauts to high-risk environments.

While the g-forces in jets and rockets differ, crews must handle intense g-loads whilst communicating effectively, managing checklists, and monitoring systems under pressure, all while staying situationally aware and ready for the unexpected.

This special workshop, in collaboration with Egress Space, will be set inside a hangar at Adelaide airport and alongside an L39C Albatross training jet. During this workshop, participants will learn about fast jets, crew resource management, the medical requirements of fast jet pilots and the role that fast jets play in astronaut training.
