Air Vice-Marshal Martin ‘Marty’ Nussio is Head Air Defence and Space Systems (ADSS) Division within the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group. He leads ADSS Division in acquiring, integrating and sustaining capabilities including Integrated Air and Missile Defence (IAMD) systems, air traffic management, and the Jindalee Operational Radar Network (JORN) for Air Force, and satellite communication, space surveillance and space control systems for Joint Capability Group and the Services.

Over more than a decade AVM Nussio has held a number of leadership appointments focused on acquiring and sustaining integrated air and space capabilities in partnership with Australian Industry, the United States and other Allies.

As Director General Air Defence Systems he led projects including AIR6500 in delivering CEA Technologies radars and the Joint Air Battle Management System, providing Australia’s Joint Force with sensors and C2 systems that are more mobile, scalable, secure, survivable and interoperable with the United States and other Allies.

As Defence’s Liaison Officer within the Australian Space Agency he worked to define civil and military space capabilities whilst contributing to a sustainable Australian Space industry.

As Program Director Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Systems Program Office he was responsible for the acquisition and integration of P-8 Poseidon (crewed maritime patrol and strike aircraft), MQ-4C Triton (remotely piloted, long range surveillance aircraft) and MQ-9B Sky Guardian (since cancelled, but would have been Australia’s first armed remotely piloted aircraft).

As Officer Commanding Wide Area and Space Surveillance Systems Program Office he was responsible for the upgrade and sustainment of JORN, Space Surveillance Telescope, C-Band Space Tracking Radar, and Overhead Persistent Infra-Red capability.

AVM Nussio joined Air Force in 1991, studying Electrical Engineering at the Australian Defence Force Academy. In his early career, he served in a range of engineering, logistics and project roles across capabilities including P-3 Orion, C-130J Hercules, Boeing 707, flight test instrumentation, and as Chief Engineer of Airborne Early Warning and Control Systems Program Office supporting E-7 Wedgetail.

AVM Nussio has a Bachelor of Electrical Engineering and a Master of Business Administration, and is a Fellow of Engineers Australia. He enjoys travelling with family, landscape painting and he is married to Amy with four children.
